Well you’ve started juicing and you’re loving it but you want to know how to take it to the next level. I’ve been juicing for a few years now and I wanted to share my 5 best tips for taking my juicing routine to the next level.
Here’s how I get the most out of my juicer and maximize the health benefits from juicing.
Keep Lots of Vegetables on Hand
When I first started juicing, I was stunned by how many vegetables when into a single glass of juice. I found that I would buy some produce for juicing and I would need to go back to the store the next day already.
I got into the habit of overbuying vegetables. Since I’m against wasting food, it makes me juice all the vegetables I have so that they don’t go bad.
In effect, I’m tricking myself into juicing more, which means I’m consuming way more vegetables than I would have.
You’ll find great deals on bulk bags of things like beets or apples. It’s good to keep these things in the house. Trust me, if you buy em, you’ll juice em!
Juice Way More Vegetables Than Fruit
Now I know that we all love the taste of mango/apple/orange juice, but it’s so packed with sugar that it starts to defeat the purpose of juicing. That sugar can really pack a punch and is not good for your body (especially in the absence of the natural fibre that comes with the fruit).
I use fruits to sweeten up a juice so that I can drink more vegetables. So for example, I will add one apple to make a vegetable juice a bit sweeter and more drinkable. Sweet fruits should rarely be the majority of the ingredients in your juice recipe.
You’ll start to get used to juices that aren’t sweet and an overly fruity juice will feel way too sweet. That’s when you know you’re doing it right!
I’m not saying that there is no place for pure fruit juices, but just keep in mind that you shouldn’t be doing that everyday.
Don’t Forget to Actually Eat Vegetables
In my opinion, juicing should not be a one stop shop for your fruit and vegetable intake. I know there are proponents of the all-juice diets out there, but I think that misses out on some of the crucial fibres that vegetables contain.
For every glass of juice I have, I like to have 2 servings of vegetables just so that I can keep a good balance.
The all-juice cleanses should only be a short-term thing, in my opinion.
Prepare Your Produce in Advance
I’m a big proponent of prepping my vegetables in advance. What does this mean? Well, start by washing everything in advance.
Then do any other prep work like cutting up vegetables to make them smaller so that they will fit in the juicer.
I find that this makes juicing more convenient. Juicing already involves a far bit of work in terms of putting together your juicer and then taking it apart and cleaning it.
If you take away some of the work by having your produce all ready to go, you will be more likely to juice. You’ll be less able to make excuses!
Use Herbs to Take Your Juices to The Next Level
I find that people overlook herbs like mint, basil, and parsley, but in my opinion these add so much to the flavour of juices.
They’ve got great nutrients and they are a nice compliment to the stronger tasting fruits and vegetables.
Throw in a bit of mint to a juice and the flavour goes to the next level!
